2022 Petit Verdot Levi Philander Davis Vineyard

A rare unblended Petit Verdot coming from a single acre block at 800 feet of elevation -- which we've named after Levi Philander Davis, who homesteaded and planted the first grapes on the property in 1878.  Winemaker Diana Snowden Seysses calls the '22 "both classic and startling" -- showcasing the character of this legendary Bordeaux varietal, including the very diverse range of aromas and flavors it can offer.  The wine was made from grapes harvested on September 12, 2022, fermented by wild, native yeasts, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, and bottled, unblended and unfined, on April 29, 2024.  74 cases were produced.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
The 2022 growing year began with a single early-winter rainstorm. Spring saw some showers in March and April, followed by frosts after bud-break. There was strong shoot growth in May and flowering occurred under ideal conditions. Early July saw the onset of veraison and the yields were looking average – a relief after the small crop in drought-stricken 2021. Through the summer we enjoyed classic Napa Valley ripening with even, moderately warm days and cool nights – until Labor Day kicked off a severe 8-day heat wave. But we were in a fortunate geographic position – while our vines are off the valley floor, enjoying evening cooling and afternoon breezes which can extend the time to maturity, at 800 feet, they are not extremely high-altitude, either. As a producer inclined toward a more traditional style, we had already picked some blocks in the normal course before the heat wave arrived. The rest were ready to come in, so like most everyone across the Napa Valley, we scrambled to bring everything in as the thermometer rose. We finished up with the Mourvèdre and Petit Verdot on September 12.
Winemaker Notes
The ‘22 Petit Verdot is unbridled and wild. Aromas of brambles, cassis and cured meats combine to make a full bodied, tannic wine which is incredibly diverse in terms of pairing potential. It will go well with saffron; with curry; and it is a great accompaniment for grilled beef with a tarragon-driven sauce bernaise. A rare unblended Petit Verdot, the wine is both classic and startling.
