Snowden Vineyards

2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Brothers Vineyard

Dense, concentrated, yet undeniably classic in style, this vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a two acre block at 850 feet of elevation -- like all of our estate wines, coming from our property on the east side of the Napa Valley between St. Helena and Rutherford.  Classic in style and elegant in balance, the 2022 vintage gave us a Brothers Cabernet bold, a bit fruit-forward, and approachable.  Winemaker Diana Snowden Seysses describes the wine as full, rich, and an outstanding representation of its site.  The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on September 10 and blended with 1% Petit Verdot picked on September 12.  Fermented by wild, native yeasts, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, 30% new, and bottled unfined on April 29, 2024.  568 cases of 750 mL bottles were produced, plus 240 magnums, 6 jeroboams, and 3 methuselas.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
The 2022 growing year began with a single early-winter rainstorm. Spring saw some showers in March and April, followed by frosts after bud-break. There was strong shoot growth in May and flowering occurred under ideal conditions. Early July saw the onset of veraison and the yields were looking average – a relief after the small crop in drought-stricken 2021. Through the summer we enjoyed classic Napa Valley ripening with even, moderately warm days and cool nights – until Labor Day kicked off a severe 8-day heat wave. But we were in a fortunate geographic position – while our vines are off the valley floor, enjoying evening cooling and afternoon breezes which can extend the time to maturity, at 800 feet, they are not extremely high-altitude, either. As a producer inclined toward a more traditional style, we had already picked some blocks in the normal course before the heat wave arrived. The rest were ready to come in, so like most everyone across the Napa Valley, we scrambled to bring in the all of our fruit as the thermometer rose, finishing with the Mourvèdre and Petit Verdot on September 12.
Winemaker Notes
An outstanding representation of our favorite two acre block within the Brothers Vineyard, the ‘22 draws you in with aromas of violets, pencil shavings and black plums. Full and rich, swelling with black cherries, cigar boxes and Christmas pudding spices, the wine is a showstopper – layered and long with silkier tannins than are usual for this block. It’s delicious now and should remain so as it develops for decades to come.
